Open Days

To minimise any disruption to members shooting when prospective new members are being shown around , the last Sunday of each month has been designated open days and all newcomers are being steered onto those days. Prospective members will only shoot on these visits if range space permits and care will be taken to avoid disrupting any member shooting competition cards. This does not affect members bringing guests or visitors along at any time, as it applies only to prospective members enquiring about membership. Members are reminded that they are responsible for any guests or visitors they bring along.

Coaching

To help improve safety on the ranges, all newcomers are now required to undergo a four session coaching course covering airguns and .22 rimfire rifles. Until successfully completing the course new shooters will be subject to one-to-one supervision when shooting. At the discretion of the coaches, existing FAC holders may complete the course more quickly. Once the basic course is completed upgrade sessions will be available for people wishing to shoot Black Powder Pistol or Rifle, Gallery Rifle, and Full-bore Rifle.

Courses were run in August to train more Range Control Officers (RCO's). Don Caffery, Dave Parker, Ali Plumpton, Rob Huxtable, Mike Gardiner, Joe Gardiner, Karen Swan and Steve Wilson all qualified as RCO's.

It is intended to run a course in the autumn to train a further five club instructors

Probationary Membership

Applicants for membership are reminded that once police checks are completed, applicants are usually offered probationary membership. Prospective members are reminded that full membership is not granted automatically but is dependant on regular shooting attendance during their mandatory six month probationary period. Probationary members are reminded that they are required to pay a £5 range fee on each visit.

100 yard Range

The club has now purchased the quarry land adjoining the current range. A start has already been made on clearing the site in preparation for the upgrade of the old existing 50 yard small-bore range (the club's original range, unused for many years) to a 100 yard full-bore rifle range. The site has been surveyed and plans drawn up which have been approved by the NRA's engineer, who will be responsible for inspecting the range and issuing the necessary safety certification when the work is finished . Applications have been made for various grants to help with the cost of this building work but in the current financial climate it remains to be seen what grant money may be available. Without grant aid it may take a bit longer to complete, but we should eventually have a 100 yard full-bore range that will make us the envy of most clubs in West Wales.
